Tasmania is to become the first Australian state to ban battery hen farming and will fast-track the phasing out of pigs in sow stalls.
The Government announced $2.5 million for animal welfare in yesterday’s state budget, including a phase-out of battery farming and the fast-tracking of a planned ban on sow stalls by the middle of next year.
Primary Industries Minister Bryan Green says the Government will immediately ban any future battery hen operation and cap the existing number of pens in production.
The Government says it will help farmers transition away from battery hen and sow stalls in response to a growing consumer preference for products that are sensitive to animal welfare.

Animals > People

Sometimes it’s just as simple as that.

borncaptive:

Bile farming in Asia is still a huge problem and there are more than 12,000 bears being held in bile farms.
Bears are kept in tiny cages with barely enough room to turn around and bile is extracted from an open wound in their chests. This causes the bears a great deal of distress and pain and many don’t even know how to walk.
Anyone who’s spoken to me before will know how passionate I am about ending the suffering of bears in Asia particularly - They’re at such a disadvantage and there’s still so much we don’t know about the shy Sun Bears. WSPA and Free the Bears do incredible work on the ground in Cambodia and Laos, rescuing, rehabilitating and even releasing Sun bears, Sloth bears, Asiatic black bears and Moon bears.
Click through the photo to read more about the horrible reality so many bears face and find out what you can do to help!

Tell Congress: Big Cats are NOT Pets! -

animalfreak11:

In the past two decades, 21 people — 5 of them children— have been killed by captive big cats in the United States. And there have been 246 maulings — and 254 escapes.

It is estimated that there are now between 10,000 and 20,000 big cats in private ownership in the United States, with more tigers privately-owned than exist in the wild.

It’s virtually impossible for a private owner to provide an appropriate habitat for a large wild cat. Sadly, the cats often live their entire adult lives in cramped backyard kennels, basements or even warehouses.

Two members of the House of Representatives, Rep. Buck McKeon and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, have just introduced a bipartisan bill (the ‘Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act’) that would prohibit the private possession of big cats (except by accredited zoos and wildlife sanctuaries).

Please sign this petition to urge Congress to pass this lifesaving legislation.

This is a sign sitting right by the grill area in my apartment complex in Dallas! It makes me so happy to think that everyone going to grill a steak sees this!

Signs like this need to be everywhere!!!

The ‘it’ll help you get skinny’ thing is a bit body-shamey, though. Help you be a healthy weight would be better. Or just cut it to ‘live longer’..?

More than true, I missed that list item.
